If you’ve ever wanted to take a class with me, now is your chance! I’m teaching a three-hour craft class through the 24PearlStreet Online Writing Program at the Fine Arts Work Center this Wednesday, January 24th, at 2pm EST. It’s over Zoom, so you can access it from wherever you are. The class is generative with a lecture component, so you’ll be hearing from me and then having silent breaks to work on a set of exercises that build on each other. There will also be time for a Q&A at the end.
Here’s a description of the class, which centers on a very specific narrative obsession of mine:
STORIES THAT STAND STILL
In this talk, we’ll explore the craft of writing fiction that doesn’t move—fiction contained in a single, discreet space as large as a house, and as small as a bed—and the implication it has for our understanding of gender, characterization, plot, and time. Stories discussed will include Angela Carter’s “The Fall-River Axe Murders,” Susan Glaspell’s “A Jury of Her Peers,” Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour,” Nancy Hale’s “The Earliest Dreams,” and Lesley Nneka Arimah’s “The Future Looks Good.”
You can register here. Tell your friends! And see you then.
This sounds like an intriguing class! Exploring the art of storytelling within confined spaces and its impact on various aspects of narrative is a unique and thought-provoking approach. 📚📝
